What is Grounding & How it Benefits Your Health

Grounding Connects You to Earth’s Calming Energy

Try an experiment – After a busy day at work, with your body exhausted and your mind jittery, spend just 10 mins of your time lying on the grass or sitting on a park bench with your bare feet touching the ground, or feeling sand slip through your fingers. How does it make you feel? Do you feel your mind and body settling down and get a sense of release?

What is Grounding?

Grounding is the act of putting your skin in contact with the Earth’s surface – soil, grass, sand, water, trees etc. It is also called as earthing.

Until a few generations ago, humans walked and slept in direct contact with the surface of the earth.

Now, with a busy life, we hardly ever are in touch with the Earth’s natural elements like soil, trees and plants, flowers, rocks etc. This creates a disconnect of our own bio-rhythm with nature’s rhythms creating dis-ease. We end up missing the nourishing, healing and calming effects of the Earth’s geomagnetic energy.

Modern lifestyle means we are wearing synthetic footwear made of plastics or rubber, living in high rise building with no access to the soil or plants. Roads and sidewalks are tiled or tarred. Even the flooring at homes and offices are tiled with synthetic material. We can buy produce from the supermarket never having to grow any food by ourselves by touching the soil.

This has brought in a sense of disconnect from our own selves, a rushed and frantic pace of life which becomes a predecessor for many ailments.

Why Connect to the Earth?

Our body is in a harmonious balance with nature - the planet and indeed the whole universe.

Our body is composed primarily of water and minerals, making it a conductor of electricity - meaning that our body is bio-electrical. Our cells generate electric currents in the body. This can be observed as electrical pulses in the heart using an ECG. The brain too

communicates through electrical signals to different parts of the body through the nervous system.

Manmade electrical and electro magnetic charges disrupt this normal functioning of the body. Sources like wifi, radiation from mobile phones, mobile towers, wiring in our homes etc disturb the balance in our bodies . Overtime, our bodies start carrying a positive charge.

The surface of the earth is electrically charged carrying an excess of electrons. When we connect our skin to the earth or other natural elements the excess charge in the body gets neutralized with the free electrons on the earth's surface. The body is thereby maintained at the same electrical potential as the earth . Connecting with the earth’s bio rhythms also aligns our own biological body clock to be in sync.

Benefits of Grounding

Many studies have been done on the positive effects of grounding. Some of them are :-

  • Reducing inflammation and chronic pains in the body

  • Draining the nervous energy in the body which can cause anxiety, panic attacks and restlessness bringing in a sense of calm

  • Improving immunity

  • Improving sleep

  • Improve blood circulation and tissue oxygenation

  • Faster injury healing

  • Normalizing blood pressure

  • Improving heart health

  • Improving attention span and mood disorders in children

How To Do Grounding?

To effectively ground yourself, you have to allow your skin to get in touch with the calming, solid energies of the Earth. Here are some ideas:-

  • Lying on the grass

  • Walking barefoot on soil, natural stone, grass or beach sand

  • Gardening without gloves

  • Touching flowers, plants, trees, leaves, sticks

  • Playing with sand

  • Eating closer to the Earth – fruits and vegetables

  • Meditating sitting on the ground

  • Yoga practice on grass/soil without a mat

Ground yourself starting from 5 minutes and go up to at least 20 minutes.

Easy DIY Grounding

What if you live in a high rise apartment and do not have the space or time for any of this?

An easy way to do this make yourself a grounding box.

Take a wooden box which is deep enough to comfortably put both your hands in. Fill the box with good quality potting soil. In one of half of the box, plant some easy growing plants which need minimal care and sunlight.

Whenever you feel anxious, jittery or cannot sleep, play with the soil on the rest half of the box. Put your hands in, notice how the soil moves in your hand, feel the calming presence, breathe deep and continue this activity with full attention for 10 minutes. You can also choose to say some positive words of affirmations. You can do the same activity by putting your feet into the box. This is a great calming activity for kids too.
