We have been conditioned to drink animal milk and consume milk products for generations. However, there is an increasing awareness about switching to plant-based milks for a number of reasons and health benefits over animal milks.
Some of the pertinent questions that many of you might be struggling with are ‘Kids need milk for brain development and immunity, how can we stop’? ‘Our ancestors drank milk and they led very healthy lives, so why not us? ‘How will you meet your calcium requirements without animal milk’? Read on to find out answers to each of these questions.
Kids & Milk
As per the laws of nature, milk is a perfect food during the initial stages of life, till teething (roughly 3 years of age). By that time the enzymes required for the digestion of milk are gone in most humans. And with the eruption of teeth, kids slowly move to eat solid foods. Their dietary requirements for good growth and development can be met with a plant-based diet.
The Tradition of Milk Drinking
Our ancestors drank Whole milk (not pasteurized), mostly raw (without additives and flavored products). And most of the time they drank milk from one cow specifically (reared at home or at the village level). So the milk was consumed within a few hours. Today, milk is sourced via huge supply chains, comprising millions of cows - not necessarily of one subspecies. Milk that we get today in our homes, is pasteurized, freeze-dried, and reconstituted. You may be drinking it months after it has been taken out. Our ancestors probably drank it once or twice a day. Now milk is hidden in almost every packaged food- biscuits, chocolates, ice creams, bakery products, etc.
No other species drink the milk of another species to nourish themselves or their offspring, except humans. Animal milk is designed as per the growth cycle of that particular species. Then why are we making this mistake? Milk from a cow is most suitable for a calf, not the human body.
The Calcium Dilemma
If you choose to quit milk, there are enough sources of calcium in the plant kingdom that can more than satisfy your dietary requirements:
-
Green leafy vegetables: Spinach, amaranthus, methi, and other vegetables, such as cauliflower, okra, radish
-
Seeds and nuts: Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds
-
Grains: Ragi and other millets
Plant-milks are also lower in calories, unhealthy fats and keep your gut healthier as they don’t contain lactose.
