This desi thirst-quencher might make you ditch the regular aerated drinks as the mercury sores high this summer. All it takes is putting together some instant ingredients to get a healthy, cooler in a jiffy. Sattu is our traditional instant food, used in a different recipe. Pre-prepare and store the sattu powder to have it handy to refresh your summer afternoons or when you wish to serve a refreshing drink to your guest.

Sattu, from Bihar, is a storehouse of fibre and proteins. It also has a cooling effect on our bodies. Sattu shikanji is a great way to add to the nutrition of sattu to our palate.


Ingredients

  • Water: 2 cups
  • Sattu powder: 2 tsp
  • Date paste: 2-3 tsp
  • Black salt: 1 tsp or to taste
  • Lemon juice: ¼ cup
  • Cumin seeds powder: ½ tsp
  • Mint leaves: a few (optional)
  • Ice cubes: handful

Method

  • In a bowl add water, honey/dates paste, lemon juice, cumin seeds powder and salt.
  • Mix well.
  • Serve chilled or with ice cubes and mint leaves.

Eating guide:

  • Food group: Legumes
  • Best time to have: as an evening snack.
  • Kala Chana (Black chickpeas) belongs to the legume family.
  • These are whole foods and a great addition for much-needed protein and fibre.
  • A wonderful substitute for packaged drinks.
