One-pot Rasam Rice (rasam sadam) - oil-free

This one-pot rasam sadam or rice is a delicacy and comfort food in the south. It is a perfect lunch-box item that does not leak unlike the rasam rice made separately and mixed. .This saves a lot of time on a busy day.


Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp of rasam powder or any rasam powder of your choice
  • 1.5 c rice
  • 4c water
  • 2 tomatoes for grinding
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • 1 lemon size ball of tamarind
  • 1 handful of curry leaves
  • 1/4c coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsp toor dal
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Unrefined salt to taste

Method

  • Soak toor dal in hot water for 15 mins
  • Soak tamarind in water and extract the pulp in advance
  • Grind rasam powder, tamarind water, unrefined salt, toor dal, curry leaves and 2 tomatoes to make a puree.
  • Make a dry tadka of cumin and mustard and keep it aside. In a hot iron pan, add cumin and mustard till it splutters
  • In a 2-3 L steel pressure cooker, add washed rice, water, ground mix, dry tadka, chopped tomatoes and mix well
  • Cook until 2 whistles
  • The rasam rice/rasam sadam is ready to be consumed. Add coriander leaves and mix well.
