Kashaya Powder
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: no cooking involved
Servings: 3 servings

Kashaya in Kannada is Kaadha in Hindi. It is essentially a natural kitchen spice drink made with a number of herbs and spices that are boiled usually in water to extract their benefits. With a variety of whole spices, easily found in an Indian household, the decoction is the most inexpensive home remedy to strengthen your immunity and fight infections.

I’m sharing here my mom’s own tried and tested concoction. She doesn’t believe in medications and swears by home remedies. This one is for colds and coughs. It’s not only effective but also very palatable and that makes it easy to administer to fussy kids.

Boil the powder in water to make your potion.

Ingredients

  • Coriander seeds: 4 Tbsp
  • Cumin seeds: 1 Tsp
  • Ajwain/ Carom seeds: 1 Tsp
  • Cinnamon: 1 inch
  • Cardamom: 1
  • Pepper: 1 Tsp
  • Dry ginger: 1 inch(use ½ tsp powder if you don’t have root)
  • Dry Turmeric root: 1 inch(use ½ powder if you don’t have root)

Method

  • Sun dry all the ingredients for half an hour.
  • If you live in humid places or places without much sunlight then place the ingredients on a warm griddle to remove any moisture.
  • Do not roast.
  • Powder the mix. Store in airtight containers and use as required.
  • Use one tablespoon of the powder in a cup of water and bring to boil with palm jaggery or palm candy for about 5-8 minutes. Cover and allow steeping for a few minutes. Strain and sip.

Wellcure Tip:

  • For kids, use 1 Tsp in a cup of water along with few tulsi leaves, one betel leaf, a few mint leaves and palm candy, bring to boil strain and sip.
  • Can add almond milk or coconut milk to it.

Eating Guide:

  • Food group: Spices.

  • Spices not only add flavour to our food but have various health benefits.

  • It can also make a great warm drink to replace regular tea and coffee.
